Household names in Sri Lanka, ‘Bhathiya & Santhush’ and ‘Iraj Weeraratne’, have made it on Universal Music India’s newest album ‘Number One Hits on the Continent’, alongside other Indian stars.
For local artistes it is a break into a royalty goldmine and possible stardom. Already, tracks by both artistes are doing the rounds on Indian television and music charts.
“We put out videos of both of these artistes on Indian television channels. The rotation is generally a week or two and then its consumers that decide how much it gets played,” Managing Director of Universal Music India, Rajat Kakar said in Colombo on Tuesday.
“It has now been four weeks since the songs from Nethara by Bhathiya & Santhush and Iraj Weeraratne’s ‘Ran-Ran-Ran’ have been on air, so there must be a huge acceptance by Indian consumers.”
The tracks have a heavy Indian music flavour but crossing over into new territory might mean loosening up on an only local language identity, Kakar says.
